About Chengde Mountain Resort National Park

Chengde Mountain Resort National Park, located in Hebei Province northeast of Beijing, encompasses the vast imperial summer retreat of the Qing emperors, combining natural beauty with significant cultural heritage. Covering an extensive area of over 5.6 square kilometers, the resort includes palaces, temples, pavilions, and expansive gardens set amidst lush wooded hills and expansive water bodies. The landscape features a blend of natural forests, rolling mountains, and numerous lakes and waterways that create an ideal environment for outdoor exploration and picnic outings. Its historical importance is profound as it served as a political and cultural center during the Qing dynasty, reflecting architectural influences from Han Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan, and Manchu cultures. Key landmarks within the park are the Eight Outer Temples, Puning Temple, and the Putuo Zongcheng Temple, which echo the international cultural ties of imperial China. Recreational opportunities include walking and hiking along scenic trails that wind through forested hills and along serene lakeshores, photography of historic sites and natural vistas, and birdwatching. The resort’s careful design preserves both cultural artifacts and natural ecosystems, attracting visitors interested in history, architecture, and nature alike. Seasonal changes bring varied appeal, with spring and autumn noted for colorful foliage and comfortable temperatures, while winter offers a quieter, snow-capped landscape. Its proximity to Beijing makes it a favored day-trip destination as well as a unique protected place where nature and imperial history coexist.
